Hoarding Favorite Authors

Some people gobble down books by their favorite authors as fast as they can find them. Me, I hoard them. Save them like pieces of fancy chocolate to treat myself whenever the mood really strikes.

My first night in Seattle for this conference, I went browsing around Pike Market, an adorable old-fashioned marketplace right above the bay, with this fantastic view of the water. Naturally, I hit the local bookstore first, before it closed. And there on the center shelf sat a Jeanette Winterson novel. Written on the Body.

I’d never read this particular one, although people call it her masterpiece. I think The Passion would be hard to top (though she nearly managed it in Sexing the Cherry). But the mood had struck, so I picked this one from the shelf, found myself a cozy little French cafĂ© in which to dine, and started to read.

From the very first line, she caught me as usual. "Why is the measure of love loss?"

That’s the thing about Jeanette Winterson books. I want to quote just about every line. They’re all so poetic, so hauntingly written, and yet they evoke the exact emotion we all experience with regards to love, passion, regret. Months later, I still have lines of her writing stuck in my head, like the chorus of a particularly catchy song.

It’s been a few years since I’ve read one of her novels, because if I had to narrow my enormous list of favorite authors down to one person – whose body of work would I want with me if I were stranded on a deserted island – she’d be the one. I hoard her titles especially close. I only read one every few years.

I’m so glad that the time has come to pick up another one. I’m only fifteen pages into Written on the Body, because I read her writing slowly. Savor the taste for as long as possible. But I’m enjoying the process.

In the meantime, Seattle is gorgeous. Expect pictures as soon as I return. I promise not to bore you with the vacation-y ones! (well, okay... maybe I might bore you a little. ;) )

  1. I do this too. One of my favorite authors, I read all of her books in a fairly short time period when I first discovered her work. But then she didn't have a new release for quite a while and it was torture. So I've started savoring her stuff. I'm behind on her new stuff now, but at least it means I have plenty of her stuff left to read.

  2. I am completely with you on Jeanette Winterson. I love her stuff, and Sexing the Cherry, The Passion, and Written on the Body are my favorites still. I do have 5 or so of her books on my shelf that I have not read yet, but like you, I'm taking my time a little bit. You will not be disappointed with Written on the Body. I do think it's the best of the three, though I love the other two so much I hate to even say that. Have fun!

  3. It goes without saying I love Sexing the Cherry (hello, quote used for my blog name?), but for years I never sought out her other books. I recently read Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, and it kinda broke my heart when I didn't love it. Until I read this post I had no intention of reading her other books-- I want to hold onto the love of Sexing the Cherry without adding into the mix disappointment about the author's other works. But now, argh, temptation and the seductive glimmer of hope! You tease, Ellen.

  4. I don't savor, I gobble. Rinse. Repeat. :)
I'll have to check out this author, never heard of her. Hope you're having a great time in Seattle.

  5. I haven't read Written on the Body yet, either. But I love Jeanette Winterson, too. Probably one of my favourite writers.

What always gets me is when a writer has written an amazing novel, and I read it and want to savour the rest of their collection but can't. Because they've only written one book (happened to me with Arundhati Roy).

  6. @Linda - haha, yeah, that's why I've started saving them... I blew through too many favorites as a kid and ran out of new books to read *pout*

@eastbaywriter - oooo, good to know! I'm excited to keep reading this now :)

@Sophia - I haven't read Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, but The Passion is (so far) my absolute favorite of hers. Even more than Sexing the Cherry (which I freaking loved). I'd try it out if you haven't yet ;)

@Angie - thanks, Seattle is awesome! and yes! you should definitely check out her stuff, especially if you like lyrical prose (to the point that it tastes like poetry, I swear)

@Vee - ahh, yes! That frustrates me so much too :) never read Arundhati Roy, hmm... *goes to google* :D

  8. Ah, someone who reads like I do. How marvelous! Most people I know of read books so fast I think, But now it's all over and you can't enjoy it anymore. I love to savor books like you do, enjoy the writing, the story. And I also have several books I'm saving because then I know I have a book I'll love just waiting for me - Ah, what a glorious feeling!

I'm a fellow campaigner - I'm not in your groups, but I wanted the fun of getting to know more writers. It's so great to meet you! I love the look of your blog with your brick wall and corkboard header! And your title is fantastic!

  10. I guess you could say I'm a hoarder, in some ways...mostly a hoarder of books I have no chance of reading any time soon. And continuously buying more books even though I have an entire bookshelf marked "TBR".
