Usually when you think of books you complain about, stories you didn't like come to mind, right?
But last weekend, as I was inches from throwing my Kindle at a wall after reading the third book in Song of Ice and Fire (don't worry, no spoilers), I realized that sometimes the books I love the most are also the ones that make me the angriest. At the end of the Deathly Hallows, when everyone and their mom was dying, I wanted to throw Rowling off a bridge.* As I read The Time Traveler's Wife, I was gritting my teeth at the stupid $*&@$&@ing author for not giving her characters a better way out of their situation. In Imajica, every time we wound up somewhere totally different from where the characters wanted to go, I got sooo impatient.
But I love all of those books. I think they are fantastic. I think their authors are incredibly talented. So why do I want to throw the novels out the window and jump up and down on their covers?
Because the authors made me care about their characters. They made me love them, and root for them, and pray for them to come out on top as much as I would if they were real people I knew.** So when they fail at their goals, I empathize with them. When they suffer, I suffer too. When they want to rip out their hair and scream in frustration, so do I.
That is the mark of a brilliant novel. Books that you're emotionally invested in have the biggest impact on you as a reader (or they do on me, anyway). Those are the stories that you find yourself still thinking about months after you finish, the stories that stick with you, the stories that birth hundreds of fanfic spinoffs, because no one else wants to leave those characters behind either.
So, as I brave my way into the depths of A Feast for Crows, book four in this series, I have to say... hats off, Martin. And if you kill any more of my favorites, I swear I will hunt you down. *cough*
* seriously, if I ever meet her in person, it would go something like this "OMFG I love you and everything you have ever written but WHYYYYYY LUPIN, HAVE YOU NO SOUL!??!?!"
** and in the case of George R.R. Martin's books, sweat bullets every time those characters get into a fight, since he's proved time and time again that No One Is Safe. During one duel after the midpoint of the third novel, I was literally having heart palpitations. YesIamthatsad.
See, I have the opposite reaction to Martin's work. Since I know everyone and their mother (hey! literally!) is going to die, I find myself not caring about anybody because there's pretty much no point. Instead it's pretty much a game of death counts. Then again this is one of my smallest problems with his writing. (and yet I read them all. ugh.) I pretty much assume everyone's dead at any given moment, ha.
ReplyDeleteASOIAF definitely does that for me - makes me angry at the way he treats his characters! My brother loves those books too and he actually just posted an angry Facebook message at one part. Have to agree that it's the mark of a good author.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Martin isn't afraid to kill characters kind of makes me love him. As a writer, you know it's got to suck for him killing off characters left and right, as much as it hurts the readers. He created these characters, he knows so much more about their lives and their pain than we ever will. So respect.
ReplyDeleteAnd when you consider what actually happened during the Middle Ages (wars, civil wars, plagues, burning witches, burning protestants etc. etc.), Martin is, strangely, one of the few fantasy writers focused on a Medieval-esque world where he actually shows that life back then was f*cking *hard*. If you were a peasant, you were pretty much screwed. If you were a woman, even one born to a nobleman, you were still screwed. If you were an ambitious nobleman or the son of one, hey, guess what, you could *still* get screwed over. Martin's death rate may look high, but really, it's just that we're used to fantasy-lands being ridiculously safe. (And disease and STD free; don't even get me started.)
Okay wow, that was a comment and a half. Sorry for hogging comments, Ellen!
ReplyDeleteHa! Martin will continue to do it to you. He's whittling down the cast of characters. I loved all the Starks, but now, well, you know! The newest book in the series had me ready to throw it against the wall a few times.
ReplyDelete@Hildred -- true, it's risky to kill off too many MCs, because then you risk alienating the reader... But, since he has so many characters, and some that we love and some we hate, I think he balances it out enough that it works.
ReplyDelete@Annalise -- haha, bet I know what part he got to... because I posted an angry FB message there too :D
@Sophia -- yes!! that's one thing i love about the series is how realistically horrible his world is. and goddamn it sucked to be a peasant. they die all the damn time >.> but yeah, the high death rate is realistic considering the time period :)
@Christine -- ahhhh don't tell me things! I'm afraid to read the next two... :/
Though, I am glad they upped the age of a few of the characters in the show. Cause, having kids do some of the stuff that kids their age did back in the middle ages... shudder. <.<
ReplyDeleteand Sophia, hog as many comments as ya want :D
