Fun with Soundtracks

You know when you stumble across that one song that embodies your WIP so well, that you just have to listen to it on loop? I found that song for my current project today: Seether's Fake It. The lyrics, the pace of the song, everything matches my opening scenes perfectly.

This inspired me to put together a soundtrack for the book. Since I'm still in the rough draft phase, the soundtrack is too, but it was neat to try and match a song to each of the important plot twists/climatic events/mood shifts that I've worked out so far. It actually helped me get an idea of the character's emotional journey -- where the intense moments are, where the breaks are, what's going through her mind at each stage...

Of course, I'm a 90s hard rock/metal teen*, so the sound remains fairly intense throughout. But my WIP is a thriller, so I think that works!

* I know, I know, all of the Brooklyn hipsters already judge me for my horrible music taste. What can I say? Loud, angry music helps me focus!

  1. That's so cool! I actually liked the song :)
My favorite band is Within Temptation, and EVERY SINGLE ONE of their songs seems to fit my WIP somehow! It's really cool!

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. I make a list of the songs that remind me of my WIP and I listen to them over and over while I'm writing, imagining the scenes in my head.

  3. I LOVE making soundtracks for novels, and I think part of the problem I've been having with failed novel attempts in the last couple of years is the inability to make a soundtrack for those stories. I am obsessed with music, and the right inspirational song can propel me through a whole novel.

  4. love it. My WIP soundtracks vary wildly, even though my genre is *mostly* UF. I've actually been building a soundtrack for my newest (and darkest) project to date--so think I'm stealing a couple songs from you :). Thanks for posting this!

  5. That is a great song! I've never made a playlist, and I never understood them until I got into my current WIP. Now I've been itching to make a playlist and this list inspires me to hurry up and do it.

  6. I've never made an actual soundtrack, but I would like yours - I'm a prog rock/heavy metal type of guy!
