Ode to Cell Phone

I read this Facebook post called "Without my cell phone", and it got me thinking about how dependent I am on mine. Like even more dependent than that list suggests.
How dependent, you ask?
Basically, without my cell phone I would not be able to:

- see in the dark
- tell if there's food stuck between my teeth
- navigate on trips
- work the NYC subway system
- listen to music wherever I go
- check my email every 0.2 seconds
- find good restaurants in whatever neighborhood I happen to be in
- locate happy hour deals
- play Solitaire obsessively
- play Backgammon almost as obsessively
- tell time
- remember appointments
- remember what I need to buy at the grocery store
- figure out how much to tip
- contact anyone except for my parents, because theirs are the only phone numbers I still have memorized
- take pictures of my random daily life
- wake up in the morning
- meet up with people (cause who plans ahead anymore? we just go "text me when you get there")
- tell what the weather is like before I get dressed
- google things to win arguments with my friends
- show strangers videos of my cats

... okay, maybe the world would be better off if I couldn't do that last one. But still! It's kind of surreal to think back to the beginning of high school, when I didn't own a cell, yet somehow still managed to take the train into downtown Pittsburgh, meet up with friends, go out to eat, and not undertip. How did I do these things. Also, how did I remember any chores I was supposed to accomplish without alarms going off in my ear?
And, while we're on the topic, how come so few YA novels mention cell phones used for anything but texting or calling? I hardly ever actually call people, first of all, and second of all... There are so many other handy things phones can do! Next time your character is stuck in a dark cave with minimal reception... Cell phone light and googling how to pick locks for the win.

  3. I just got an iPhone, and my phone went from being that thing I leave in my backpack and ignore while carrying around my iPod, to that thing that is constantly in my pocket or in my hand. I play music all day long. I love having e-mail updated automatically (and giving me a "ding" to let me know it's here!), a connection to my writing websites, the ability to update my My Fitness Pal diary any time I eat or workout, a book on my Kindle app, texts! (my old phone was worthless for texting), games, the weather, and many other things right there in one device.
