Stephen Colbert on Children's Books

Two of my favorite things join forces in an interview of epic hilarity!

In a recent episode of the Colbert Report, Stephen decides to cash in on the celebrity-children's-book craze.

(etc. etc.)

Just how does he go about doing this? By interviewing Maurice Sendak, of course.

Yep. That Maurice Sendak.

The interview is split into two parts, because, I can only assume, Colbert couldn't bring himself to cut enough of the hilarity that is Maurice Sendak down into one episode.

In part one, Sendak explains, "I don't write for children. I write, and somebody says, that's for children. I didn't set out to make children happy."

And when Colbert asks if he likes children, we get: "I like them as few and far between as I do adults. Maybe a bit more, because I really don't like adults. At all."

Another quotable moment?

"Newt Gingrich is an idiot. There is something so hopelessly gross and vile about him." ~ Maurice Sendak

And of course, this gem:

Part two is just as chock-full of hilarity.

Colbert: "What do you think of the current state of children's literature?"

Sendak: "Abysmal."

Colbert: "What does it take for a celebrity to make a successful book?"

Sendak: "Well you've started already by being an idiot."

Dying! Anyway. I highly recommend watching the rest. Especially the sharpie-sniffing scene at the end of part two. Just saying. Whole new love for Maurice Sendak.
