MAKE A DIFFERENCE in Marriage Equality!

THERE ARE BRIBES AT THE END OF THIS POST. justsaying.

If you're reading this, you are probably a writer (or a big reader). So you've got a powerful imagination.

Close your eyes and imagine you're in love. Imagine you've been in love with that person for years. You work as a couple. You want to spend the rest of your lives together. You're 100% sure that this is the love of your life.

Now imagine your country, a country that claims to uphold freedom and equality and the separation of church and state, has told you that you are not allowed to marry the love of your life. Ever. You will be denied the rights that other couples have. You will be excluded from your partner's health care benefits. You won't be allowed to visit them in the hospital during surgery, because you aren't a relative or a spouse.

You are not ALLOWED to love this person.

How pissed off are you now? I hope you're as angry as I am that our country has STILL allowed injustices like this to carry on.

But GUESS WHAT? Today YOU can make a difference. New York State only needs ONE MORE VOTE (JUST ONE) to pass the Marriage Equality Bill that would allow same-sex couples to wed in this state. YOU CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

There are several undecided senators. Click here for the full list, along with telephone numbers and contact details.

All you have to do is call and say two sentences. "I am calling to support Marriage Equality. My name is ___." That's it.

And if you're afraid of phones (it's okay, I was too, for a very long time. Fine, maybe I still have issues ordering food from new delivery places, and I make my roomies call instead... cough), I'll make it even easier for you. Here are their emails:

gball@nysenate.gov,
fuschill@senate.state.ny.us,
hannon@nysenate.gov,
lanza@senate.state.ny.us,
little@nysenate.gov,
grisanti@nysenate.gov,
saland@nysenate.gov,
flanagan@senate.state.ny.us

Copy and paste this into an email, and write something like this (or copy this exactly):

Dear Senator,
I urge you to support Marriage Equality.

There must be equal rights under the law. Anything else is discrimination.

Thank you for your support.
Best,

YourName

(if you're feeling ambitious, you can separate the emails out and address each one to the senators personally. Their names are listed here).

THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO.

And also, if you do it, post here in the comments. Either let me know that you called, or post the receipt of email you received from the senators' inboxes. Everyone who does will be entered in a SUPERCOOL CONTEST for FREE BOOKS.

I haven't decided which free books yet. But I have a lot saved up. Or maybe I'll even give more than one away if lots of people enter. Or Barnes and Noble gift cards. WHO KNOWS.

Anyway, enough bribing. PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE go email or call the senators.

  5. Oh Ellen I completely agree. It's upsetting when ignorance and fear dictates things like this. At least things are changing. It's slow and difficult, but it's promising that this is a discussion so frequently these days. It makes me proud to be an ally.

  6. @Lauren - sounds like a great giveaway! I'll check it out now :)

@Samantha - it's just frustrating how slowly this is moving, because it should not be a political issue. it's an issue of free rights, and the separation of church and state, and the fact that it's still so debated just... GAH. want to rip out hair sometimes. I have so many friends this affects, and I hate that the gov thinks it's ok to just ignore their rights...

but! it has been really great to see how many people do care over the last couple days... <3

  7. I definitely agree with you! It's especially frustrating because it seems like as soon as any progress is made, someone forces it backwards. The fact that people are so afraid of those who are different than them just blows my mind.
I have been a pretty active ally for some time. I'm a med student and we have a gays, lesbians, and allies advancing medicine organization here - please pass along anything that you think we could do to help out!

  8. Just e-mailed the senators. Gmail doesn't support read receipts -- does my word count as proof of entry, or do I need to do something else?

  9. @Travis - you're fine! :) thanks for emailing!!

@Samantha - very cool! I think the calling and/or emailing is the biggest thing I know of to do right now... but I'll keep an eye out!

  10. I emailed each of the Senators. Hopefully they listen and decide to step up and help end this discrimination. I also have Gmail so I lack the read receipts but I did get a form letter from Senator Lanza a little while ago:

    "Thank you for your e-mail.

Please know that your questions, comments and concerns are important to me,
and that my office works every day to respond to our constituents in a
    timely manner.

If your inquiry requires direct, personal assistance by a staff member, we
will contact you as soon as possible.

If you need a more immediate response, please call my district office
    718-984-4073.

Again, thank you for taking the time to reach out to my office and for
providing your insight on the issues affecting you, your family and your
    community.

    Sincerely,

    ANDREW J. LANZA
