Action/Adventure YA Boy Books Giveaway!!

Since I stocked up on so many lovely ARCs at BEA, I think it's about time I started giving some of them away!!!

I've got a serious truckload of books here, so I'm going to be giving them away by theme/genre/weird-categories-into-which-I-decided-to-sort-them. This week's category is ACTION/ADVENTURE (also incorporating Thrillers) with BOYS AS THE MAIN CHARACTERS. Because we all know that YA can be a little short on DUDE NARRATORS at times.

Also, I'm going to be doing this giveaway a little differently. Here's how it works:

If less than 10 people enter, I will give away book number ONE to one of those people.
If more than 10 people enter, I will give away book numbers ONE AND TWO to two of those people (one each).
If more than 20 people enter, I will give away book numbers ONE, TWO AND THREE to three of those people.
And so on and so forth.

I don't expect a ton of people to enter, so I will only announce the first 3 book giveaways for now. But as the time draws closer, if we get close to or more than 20 entries, I will announce the magical book 4, and so on. Basically, if you don't like the first three books on here, but you like some of the other books you know I've stockpiled, drag all of your friends here to enter, and you could unlock a better one!! Or if you just want more chances to win, drag your friends here for more giveaways!

Without further ado, HERE ARE THE BOOKS ON OFFER THIS WEEK:

Book Number 1 (which I will be giving away no matter how many people enter!):

Perry Stormaire is a normal high school senior– he is busy applying to college and rehearsing with his band –until he agrees to go to the prom with the Lithuanian exchange student who is staying with his family. It turns out that Gobi Zaksauskas is not the mousy teenager that she seems but rather an attractive, confident trained assassin. Instead of going to the prom, Perry finds himself on a wild ride through the streets of New York City as Gobi commandeers the Jaguar his father lent him for the prom in order to take out her targets. Perry learns a lot about himself – and ends up with some amazing material for his college application essays.

Book Number 2 (which I will give away if 10 people or more enter):

From Goodreads:

Shelter (Micky Bolitar, #1)Shelter by Harlan Coben

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
View all my reviews

Mickey Bolitar's year can't get much worse. After witnessing his father's death and sending his mom to rehab, he's forced to live with his estranged uncle Myron and switch high schools.

A new school comes with new friends and new enemies, and lucky for Mickey, it also comes with a great new girlfriend, Ashley. For a while, it seems like Mickey's train-wreck of a life is finally improving - until Ashley vanishes without a trace. Unwilling to let another person walk out of his life, Mickey follows Ashley's trail into a seedy underworld that reveals that this seemingly sweet, shy girl isn't who she claimed to be. And neither was Mickey's father. Soon, Mickey learns about a conspiracy so shocking that it makes high school drama seem like a luxury - and leaves him questioning everything about the life he thought he knew.

First introduced to readers in Harlan Coben's latest adult novel, Live Wire, Mickey Bolitar is as quick-witted and clever as his uncle Myron, and eager to go to any length to save the people he cares about. With this new series, Coben introduces an entirely new generation of fans to the masterful plotting and wry humor that have made him an award-winning, internationally bestselling, and beloved author.

Book Number 3 (which I will give away if there are more than 20 entries):

From Goodreads:

We the Animals: A novelWe the Animals: A novel by Justin Torres

View all my reviews

An exquisite, blistering debut novel

Three brothers tear their way through childhood— smashing tomatoes all over each other, building kites from trash, hiding out when their parents do battle, tiptoeing around the house as their mother sleeps off her graveyard shift. Paps and Ma are from Brooklyn—he’s Puerto Rican, she’s white—and their love is a serious, dangerous thing that makes and unmakes a family many times.

Life in this family is fierce and absorbing, full of chaos and heartbreak and the euphoria of belonging completely to one another. From the intense familial unity felt by a child to the profound alienation he endures as he begins to see the world, this beautiful novel reinvents the coming-of-age story in a way that is sly and punch-in-the-stomach powerful.

Written in magical language with unforgettable images, this is a stunning exploration of the viscerally charged landscape of growing up, how deeply we are formed by our earliest bonds, and how we are ultimately propelled at escape velocity toward our futures.

DON'T WORRY if we don't reach enough entries to unlock them all! There will be other chances to win them throughout the summer. Expect MANY MORE giveaways in the near future!

Rules for entry are simple:

Step #1: Follow this blog. (if you don't already, that is!)
Step #2: Post here.

What should you post about? Well, it can be anything, but to make it exciting, why not post about the most ACTIONY/ADVENTURESOME/THRILLING thing you've ever done! Don't worry, it can be as heart-stopping as petting a large dog for the first time (LISTEN THEY ARE SCARY WITH THE BIG TEETH OKAY). Just post anything you found really scary but secretly exciting!

For example: I road the SkyCoaster at Kennywood. Yep, it's 300 feet in the air. And the only thing holding you onto that bungee cord is a rather flimsy-looking cloth Velcro thing. You get pulled slowly backwards up to the top (all the while with my friend whispering ohf***ohf***ohf*** in my ear faster than I have ever heard anyone swear in terror before), and at the apex, you have to pull the string to release yourself. Which in our terror we were unable to do. So then this little recording voice in our ear was all "YOU FAIL so we will drop you anyway, 3, 2, 1, bye" and then... for the first few seconds, it didn't feel like falling. It felt like flying.
Until the bungee cord kicked in and pulled us into a swing. Then it just felt like being on a really gigantic swing.
Okay, there's my action-adventure. What's yours?

EDITED TO ADD: duh, forgot an end-date. This contest will run until next Friday (July 22nd)!

  1. My biggest adventure? ugh....I'm not adventurous! I guess maybe that one time...when I thought there was a ghost in my room. (YES, I believe in ghosts.) But yeah...I thought there was a ghost in my room and it creeped me out and I had to sleep in another room for a few days straight...It was a mean ghost :/

Yeah, I'm a fail of adventure-ness.(and currently don't care about grammar very much at all...)

  2. @K.T. - that sounds pretty adventurous to me! even if it was inadvertent :P ... what did the ghost do? or why did you think there was one? I love ghost stories! ;)

  3. @Ellen thanks :) I thought there was a ghost because I kind of leaned against the wall and the light got unplugged and then when I moved, it turned back on. That, mixed with talking to friends about ghosts (all of them that were there believed in ghosts and thought they had some ghostly experience) made for one really scared me. :) Plus, afterwards, I just had a feeling that something was wrong. The feeling comes back sometimes still, it's rather annoying.

  4. Man, I haven't done anything thrilling. I hope I win after this depressing realisation. I also hope this comment counts, and that the giveaway is international. Gosh, don't I sound optimistic today?

  5. Oh, yes! Guess I should have added that. International is cool :) but if Royal Mail loses it, don't blame me? :/ I have the WORST LUCK EVER with the Brit mailing service... x.x

  6. My biggest adventure was probably traipsing around New York drunk with a friend, finding new people to talk to on every block, jumping into an alread full cab, etc..... sounds moredangerous than adventuresome now that I type it, though.

  7. I commented earlier but it's not here! So I apologize if this is duplicate :)

I went to Africa on my own a couple of years ago by myself which was pretty exciting/scary/life-changing.

  8. It wasn't really an adventure because I did it for work, but hanging out of a helicopter and shooting exotic wildlife with a tranquilizer gun was pretty thrilling. All I could think about was how SKINNY that rope attached to my safety harness looked...ay! But at the same time it was quite the adrenaline rush :)

  9. Hmmmm, maybe swimming a mile in the ocean all alone for the first time. It was definitely scary! Some people might consider it stupid, but I felt very accomplished afterward. Now, of course, I always take a buddy. And for anyone interested in open-water swimming, rule #1: wear a neon-colored swimming cap!

  10. @TheFan - LOL welllll that's not tooooo dangerous? I mean, lots of people jump in cabs in NYC... *cough* right?? ;D

@Sam - OMG that sounds amazing!! I am so jealous. I've always wanted to see Africa... and going on your own takes some guts!

@lee & Allison - ... you guys definitely beat me on the adventurous front. I would've had a heart attack, hanging out a helicopter... and even more so swimming in open ocean. WHAT ABOUT THE SHARKS?!?!? also, wouldn't the neon attract more attention? like from SHARKS??

... Not that I have a phobia, or anything.

  11. Biggest adventure would have to be last year when I went to Spain and Italy. That was an adventure of the unexpected every day for about a week!

  12. My action-adventure was not something I did, but something that happened. Sometimes the action finds you.

I was a soldier deployed to Saudi Arabia during the first Persian Gulf War. Our battalion insisted on all the tents being lined up dress-right-dress. Each tent was only a couple of feet apart, and they'd tied the tent lines to each tent, so they were all connected. My company's tent was directly behind the battalion headquarters, and the female tent directly behind the battalion commander's tent and the guard duty tent.

Suddenly a cry goes i[, and people are starting to run around in a panic. To our horror, the guard duty tent is on fire. The battalion commander's driver had been trying to fill up a kerosene lantern. He didn't realize that it was still it even though he couldn't see the flame. As he filled it, fire went straight up the donkey leg into the can, and he threw the can in the tent. Eye roll.

The tents are all canvas, so very flammable. It went up and was gone within in minutes. Worse, the fire was crawling across on the ropes to the battalion commander's tent, and it ignited. A good wind was blowing towards our tent line, which meant we were in danger, too. I ran back to check the female tent to see if anyone was there.

As I came out, bullets are popping off. The battalion commander had left rounds in his tent, and the fire was setting them off. This ignited a panic, and soldiers -- particularly the men -- were bolting for foxholes and diving (literally) in. One of the cooks, who was a former Marine, got the water truck to begin hosing down the fire while two other soldiers got knifes and dropped the tent next to the burning ones. That kept the fire from spreading to any other tents, but the two that burned were completely destroyed.

  13. My biggest Adventure. Gosh, that's hard! I was locked in school over night, spent 3 hours hanging (yes, hanging) 67 feet in the air, and snuck around buildings to crash the backstage parties of concerts.

However, I'm going with the good old forest. When I was a child, my mom and my grandma took me, my brother and my cousins to the woods quite often. And equally often we, the kids, ran away into the forest. We'd always stick together and go back to the trail at 5pm. Except for the one day when I ran off on my own.
I was very deep into the woods, where there are now bushes and the trees are tall and slim. I practically spent the whole day there. I think it was an old animal cave, where I hid when it started to rain. I had no watch, so it wasn't until it got really cold that I realized how much time I had spent there and that the sun wasn't above the woods anymore. I vaguely knew the way back, but it really started to get scary when the forest woke up. There were strange noises everywhere, some familiar, some completely unkown.
It's not hard to imagine kids getting lost in the woods. Luckily I heard my mom's call and found them. Turned out I was merely 30 minutes late. It was scary and thrilling as hell, though.

  16. I was surfing in la jolla (in san diego) with my boyfriend. It was an awesome surf day until I stepped on a sting ray and my foot swelled up like a balloon. Ouch. Being the idiot that I am, I kept surfing for a few more minutes...when we got out, a news reporter sprinted up to us and asked if she could interview us for the nightly news. We said yes, and she proceeded by saying "so what makes you go out and surf while those two 12ft great whites are out there. They attacked a kayaker yesterday." ....
.....no wonder there was nobody in the water. Haha. Strangest day of my life. I went home and took care of my foot after that. :)

Thanks for the giveaway!!! I follow

  17. I follow you!! I'm not a very adventurous person to be honest. I went to a water park once when I was younger and I actually went down the slide where you are totally inside it and riding on a round tube. It was crazy, but I'm glad I did it.
