If you haven't read Scott Westerfeld's book Peeps, you probably won't get the reference... In which case, you should go and read it now, because it is awesome. And because it contains the most scientific and believably realistic explanation of vampirism I've ever read (trust me, you'll like it even if you're not a vamp-fan. It's like no other vampire novel I've ever read - and I read more than my fair share during those angsty teen years).
