This term makes me think of creepy-crawly things. Like a cross between earwigs and Zim:
But! Turns out it is a fancy term* for, according to Wikipedia, "a piece of music that sticks in one's mind so that one seems to hear it, even when it is not being played."
I love that there is a word for this. HOW COOL IS ENGLISH, YOU GUYS?! Ahem.
Anyway, learning this of course made me want to share the earworm that has been plaguing me for the past couple of weeks. I'm not sure what it is about this tune that makes it so dang sticky. Maybe the combination of rock background music and badass lyrics about how awesome nerds are. ... Actually, yeah, that's probably it.
Guys. WE'RE THE ONES THAT ARE COOL**. But we all knew this already, I'm sure. ;)
* I'm getting old, I don't know all this newfangled slang anymore...
** or maybe I should say "we're the ones that are 1337"? I'm showing my slang-age again, aren't I...

It actually DOES exist in English! Because it is quite a common expression in German and I would just translate it and say 'earworm' in English and people would look at me all weird. Now I can be all superior and inform them it is a real word ;)
ReplyDeleteMust be behind the times...haven't heard of this one!
ReplyDeleteI must admit it sounds like an icky parasite, not a common deja-vu-type thing we all get. I saw your sig on AW. Good luck on your Horror novel. I write YA Horror, too, and I'm thrilled to see others in the genre. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fun song. I'd never heard it before. And earworms, huh? Does sound a bit creepy but that's kind of funny that a word exists for this. LOL
