If you have never heard of the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, you should look into it. If you write children's books (picture books through young adult), you should definitely join. It's the single best thing I've done to further my writing career -- at the conferences I learned A TON about submissions and agents and editors and how to pitch people. Through their crit-group match program, I found an awesome critique group here in the city. Through recent meetings, I met two amazing YA writers (oh hai Corrie and Ghenet!) and
Yes, that's right. You apply for this grant, and you get a chance to win MONEYS toward finishing your novel. HOW AWESOME.
Plus, some great authors have won grants before, like the Contemporary YA Fiction grant, and gone on to fame and fortune (oh hai Jay Asher).
This year's winner was none other than my ever-fabulous crit-partner, Corrie Wachob!
WOOHOO!!! That is A BIG DEAL. Also, the novel she won it for, The Secret Keepers, is SUPER-FAB. You should go say congrats and stalk her** before she becomes famous and they ban that sort of thing.
